Immy Owusu
Described by Don Letts (BBC Radio) as “the very definition of culture clash,” Immy’s ‘Afrodelik’ sound weaves together psychedelia, Zamrock, and Highlife.
Growing up in the Australian surf town of Torquay/Jan Juc, he cut his teeth drumming in the local rock scene while also performing traditional West African music with his family. Driven to explore the trans-Atlantic ties between Pan-African rhythm, blues, and rock ‘n’ roll, Immy travelled to Ghana to study with his grandfather, ‘Palm Wine Highlife’ legend Koo Nimo.
Returning to Australia, he spent the lockdown years living in a rundown caravan in the bushland behind Bells Beach, where he immersed himself in Zamrock and psychedelic world music. Out of this period came his debut album LO-LIFE!, featuring members of Surprise Chef, Karate Boogaloo and The Senegambian Jazz Band. The record earned an Australian Music Prize nomination and was named album of the week on PBS, SYN, and FIP Radio France, alongside earning him an award for ‘Best Musician’ at the 2023 Music Victoria awards.
In 2025, Immy collaborated with acclaimed hip-hop producer Sensible J on the EP Spiritual War, and is set to release his second album AFRODELIKIZM with Hopestreet Recordings in 2026.
