Born out of a deep love for the dancefloor, Wrong Way Up channel vintage Afrodisco and psychedelic boogie to bring a new kind of heat.
Paying homage to Frances Bebey, William Onyeabor and Lijadu Sisters, the Melbourne-based Afro-synth duo delivers energetic melodies, deep grooves and addictive chants – led by a less-is-more manifesto. Way Up comprises vocalist Emma D, along with songwriter/producer, ADP. Signed to renowned UK based record label Soundway Records,Wrong Way Up’s debut album ‘Totally Right’ was released in early 2025 on Soundway Records, and been heard on NTS Radio, BBC Radio 6, Worldwide FM, 3RRR (Album Of TheWeek), PBS FM (Album of The Week), KCRW, FBi Radio and Double J. KEXP Radio(Seattle) raved over the “fresh, funky, fantastic” sound of the record. Emma D, a gospel singer originally from South Sudan, showcases the power and attitude of the female African voice. While ADP, a seasoned performer and DJ, weaves vintage synthesizers and drum machines through energetic, pulsating grooves. Emma D and ADP previously collaborated on the band Broadway Sounds, performing at Glastonbury Festival, WOMAD UK, Vivid Festival, Splendour in the Grass, amongst others.
Quickly garnering a reputation for their high-energy live show, Wrong Way Up have brought the boogie to WOMADelaide, A Festival Called Panama, Melbourne International Jazz Festival, JerkFest, Strawberry Fields, St Kilda Festival, OKMotels and RISING. They have supported Cut Copy (Forum), Essendon Airport(Punters Club) and Eddy Current Suppression Ring (Fed Square).
